Early Years Foundation Stage EYFS
In our Early Years setting, children learn through play, exploration and carefully planned activities. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework that guides learning and development from birth to the end of Reception.
The EYFS is designed to support children’s growth in a safe, nurturing environment and to give them the best possible start to school life.
The 7 Areas of Learning
Children in the EYFS learn through seven areas of learning and development, which are all closely linked and equally important.
Prime Areas
These areas are especially important for building strong foundations for learning, wellbeing and relationships.
-
Communication and Language
Children develop their listening skills, understanding and confidence in speaking. -
Physical Development
Children build strength, balance and coordination through active play, while also developing fine motor skills needed for writing and everyday tasks. -
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Children learn to manage their feelings, build friendships, develop independence and understand right and wrong.
Specific Areas
These areas build on the prime areas and help children develop key knowledge and skills.
-
Literacy
Children develop early reading and writing skills, including phonics, storytelling and mark-making. -
Mathematics
Children learn about numbers, counting, patterns, shapes and problem-solving through practical activities. -
Understanding the World
Children explore people, places, nature, technology and different cultures, helping them make sense of the world around them. -
Expressive Arts and Design
Children use their imagination and creativity through art, music, role play and design.
How Children Learn
Learning in the EYFS takes place through:
-
Play-based activities
-
Adult-led and child-initiated learning
-
Indoor and outdoor experiences
-
Daily routines that support independence and confidence
Teachers carefully observe children and plan activities that build on their interests and next steps in learning.
Assessment in EYFS
Assessment is ongoing and based on observation, discussion and children’s work. At the end of Reception, children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals, which describe what most children are expected to achieve by the end of the EYFS.
Key Stages One and Two – Ages 5 -9 (Years 1- 4)
As children move through the school, lessons become more structured but remain creative and engaging. We encourage curiosity and problem-solving while helping children develop essential skills in reading, writing and maths.
Subjects taught include:
- English and Mathematics
- Science
- History and Geography
- Art and Design
- Design and Technology
- Music
- Physical Education
- Computing
- Religious Education
Learning that takes place should be offered in an interesting and stimulating way. We try to offer a variety of first-hand experiences to make the learning process purposeful, meaningful and appropriate to each child. We expect high standards and encourage everyone to do their best, whatever their level of ability. Every teacher uses a wide range of teaching strategies to enable the children to find the way that they learn best. Each class provides parents with a curriculum map for each half term.
Enrichment and Experiences
We believe learning should extend beyond the classroom. Children enjoy:
-
Educational visits and visitors
-
Topic days and special events
-
Outdoor learning opportunities
-
Assemblies that celebrate values, achievements and diversity
These experiences help bring learning to life and create lasting memories.
Supporting Personal Development
Children’s wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. Through PSHE lessons, assemblies and everyday school life, we help children learn how to:
-
Build positive relationships
-
Manage their feelings
-
Stay safe and healthy
-
Show kindness, respect and responsibility
